Securing Benefits and Building a Legacy

Establishing a Stronger Future: The Formation and Success of IAFF Local 4807

The Palm Coast Professional Firefighters were established in 2010 in response to the economic challenges caused by the 2008 Great Recession. To protect their members from layoffs and advocate for stronger benefits, Local 4807 of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) was formed. After months of procedural hurdles, a vote was held, and the IAFF was chosen to represent the career firefighters of the Palm Coast Fire Department.

Since its inception, the Local has grown to represent 99% of the department's membership. One of the core goals from the beginning was the pursuit of a defined benefit retirement plan. Through a partnership with the City of Palm Coast and with the unanimous support of the Palm Coast City Council, we are proud to announce the approval of a new pension agreement.

This achievement is the culmination of four years of hard work, including complex discussions, navigating labor laws, actuarial analysis, and a deep understanding of pension systems. It reflects the collaboration between a forward-thinking city administration, a dedicated city council, and a committed union.

Previously, the Palm Coast Fire Department was one of only three departments in the state without a pension plan. As fewer people apply for firefighting positions nationwide, this new plan will make our department more competitive, helping us attract and retain top talent to protect our community.

Opportunities to create lasting, historical change for both current and future generations are rare, and this marks a significant milestone for our department.
